Bayer has launched Bayaspirin® Protect 100 in China
Bayer Healthcare Co. Ltd. in China has launched Bayaspirin® Protect 100. Because of the 100-year history of the "wonder drug" Aspirin®, a unique, limited-edition set of Aspirin® stamps has been issued to mark the official launch in China. The stamps were produced in collaboration with the Chinese postal service. Sixteen motifs illustrate the highlights from the history of Aspirin®.
stamps The motifs include the famous 1930s Shanghai film star Ruan Lingyu in an early advertisement for Aspirin® and the pain-killer's journey to the moon in 1969. The stamps also feature Dr. Felix Hoffmann, the scientist who discovered the active ingredient in Aspirin®, and Carl Duisberg with his wife; Duisberg's work was a fundamental factor in Bayer's progress towards becoming a global corporation. All the Aspirin® stamps combine the historical motifs with the Chinese lucky red knot.

5,000 sets of 16 stamps were printed in total. They were given to selected recipients during the launch of Bayaspirin® Protect 100.
WHO classifies active ingredient of Aspirin® as essential medicine.
03 February 2003
WHO Logo Geneva - Acetylsalicylic acid, the active ingredient of Aspirin®, has been included by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its "Model list of essential medicines" in three categories. The list contains medicines that satisfy the priority health care needs of the population and are therefore an essential component of any health care system.

The crucial criteria for selection were efficacy, tolerability, global availability and the affordability of the medicine. Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) qualified in all points for three indications: pain, prevention of frequently fatal vascular occlusive events such as myocardial infarction and stroke and, for the first time, acute migraine attacks. "We are proud that the importance of Aspirin® has been confirmed by the WHO," said Dr. Umberto Filippi from Bayer and added, "The evaluation of Aspirin®'s tolerability in particular shows that this active substance is one of the best in this respect."

The 12th updated edition of this list contains a total of 325 active substances that exert a particularly high level of therapeutic benefit in infectious and chronic diseases affecting the majority of the world's population.

"After five years the external data monitoring board asked that we terminate the study because of a striking, very extreme benefit of aspirin. Aspirin® reduced the risk of a first heart attack by 44 percent, and this was quite an earthshaking finding at that time."
