Advancing the benefits of aspirin at the WCC 2006
Aspirin Cardio was well represented in a successful satellite symposium on the opening day of the World Cardiology Congress (WCC) 2006 in Barcelona, Spain. This congress was jointly organised by the European Society of Cardiology and the World Heart Federation (WHF) and was the largest event of the year in cardiovascular (CV) medicine. This year’s Bayer HealthCare Aspirin satellite symposium was entitled ‘Advancing cardiovascular risk reduction with aspirin’ and the panel of international experts and a strong scientific programme attracted over 400 delegates. The symposium – co-chaired by Professor Sidney C. Smith, Jr (USA) and Professor Georg Noll (Switzerland) – consisted of three keynote presentations and a panel discussion session. A number of interesting topics were addressed, including the role of aspirin in the primary prevention of CV events, the anti-inflammatory activity of aspirin in improving vascular function and reducing CV risk in individuals with (pre)diabetes and issues surrounding variable antiplatelet response. The panel discussion session was highly interactive and reiterated the efficacy of aspirin in the prevention of CV events across the CV risk continuum and highlighted the implications of these aspirin data in clinical practice.
Bayer HealthCare demonstrated power and its variety of products in the cardiovascular and diagnostics market segment - today and in the future!
The theme presented at the Bayer HealthCare booth was "Connecting Cardiovascular Prevention Strategies - Look ahead, think again!". It connected the diagnostic and therapeutic areas of the products presented and underlined their additional benefits. The good position and welcoming, modern design of the booth attracted a large number of visitors. A quiz card readable with three-dimensional decoder spectacles only, challenged the visitors on key data displayed for the represented products, namely Adalat, Aspirin, Pritor/Kinzal, Glucobay, rivaroxaban (in phase III clinical development) and the B-type natriuretic peptide test (BNP). Furthermore, an electronic learning tool and on screen non-stop presentations provided the visitors with updates on the Bayer HealthCare cardiovascular portfolio.

A further satellite symposium was held to review the current standing of cardiovascular risk reduction strategies. The symposium, chaired by Professor Lars Rydén (Sweden), was well attended. The programme comprised three debates, each followed by discussion and enthusiastic voting by the audience on key related issues. In the first debate, Dr. Henry Elliott (UK) proposed that the management of cardiovascular risk in hypertensive patients should focus on blood-pressure lowering. To counter this view, Professor Ton Rabelink (Netherlands) highlighted the value of antihypertensive agents, such as Adalat, that offer vasoprotective benefits beyond blood-pressure control. The second debate saw Professor Raffaele de Caterina (Italy) advocated the use of low-dose Aspirin in all cardiovascular patients, unless contraindicated, to reduce the risk of a further cardiovascular event or death. In contrast, Professor Héctor Bueno (Spain) stressed that Aspirin therapy should be introduced at an earlier stage to prevent a first cardiovascular event. Professor Stefano Del Prato (Italy) started the third debate, highlighting the glycaemic and cardiovascular benefits of Glucobay in type 2 diabetes patients. Professor Jean-Louis Chiasson (Canada), however, recommended that antihyperglycaemic intervention should be initiated before the onset of type 2 diabetes, and advocated the use of Glucobay in prediabetic individuals to reduce the risks of developing both diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The data and views presented, and the novel format of the symposium, were highly appreciated by the audience.

Bayer HealthCare contributed to the WCC with two further satellite symposia, one each for rivaroxaban and BNP. In addition, two joint satellites on Pritor/ Kinzal have been organised together with Boehringer Ingelheim.

"After five years the external data monitoring board asked that we terminate the study because of a striking, very extreme benefit of aspirin. Aspirin® reduced the risk of a first heart attack by 44 percent, and this was quite an earthshaking finding at that time."
