Aspirin Cardio and Pritor/Kinzal with impressive data at the Eurpean Stroke Congress in Nice

The XVII. European Stroke Conference (ESC), held from May 13-16, 2008 in Nice/France, was aimed at stroke researchers and specialised clinic personnel to update their knowledge on the prevention and treatment of stroke.
Bayer Schering Pharma presented the established benefits of Aspirin Cardio (low-dose ASA) in the prevention of primary and secondary stroke and the latest ONTARGET results on Pritor®/Kinzal® (telmisartan) with regard to gold standard CVD protection at its well visited exhibition stand.
Of special interest among the scientific workshops and presentation was the presentation of PRoFESS® (Prevention Regimen for Effectively Avoiding Second Strokes), the largest secondary stroke prevention trial ever. The study is sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and in parts co-funded by Bayer Schering Pharma.
For the first time, a study compared the efficacy and safety of dipyridamole plus ASA as fixed combination (Aggrenox), with clopidogrel, and of telmisartan with placebo, in the presence of background blood pressure treatments, in preventing recurrent stroke. PRoFESS® was designed to provide important data on the efficacy of starting antihypertensive and antiplatelet therapy in the early post-stroke period.
In the trial, the primary endpoint of recurrent stroke was not statistically significantly different between both treatment groups. However, PRoFESS® reaffirms the safety and tolerability of ASA and telmisartan in stroke patients and provides valuable information on reducing cardiovascular events by comparing different therapeutic options.
