Targeting multiple risk factors to optimise cardiovascular care
wcc.jpg The 16th World Congress of Cardiology in Buenos Aires, Argentina was an ideal scientific forum to promote and discuss two very topical clinical studies: TALENT (Adalat) and ARRIVE (Aspirin Cardio), which will contribute to the optimisation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) treatment practices. Bayer Schering Pharma (BSP) hosted a satellite symposium, a media event, a ‘Meet the Expert’ session and exhibition booth activities, providing educational support. ‘Targeting multiple risk factors to optimise cardiovascular care’ was presented by an international panel of experts including Alberto Villamil, Argentina, Sidney Smith, Jr, USA, Giuseppe Mancia, Italy and Peter Meredith, UK.

The media event not only encouraged journalists to attend the symposium, but an open interactive session with Professors Smith and Mancia allowed a number of the attendees to raise some very important points about how and when cardiovascular (CV) risk factors should be targeted. Again in the focus with its benefits: Adalat and Aspirin Cardio. This year’s BSP booth was one of the most popular in the exhibition hall – positioned at the entrance it attracted a constant stream of delegates who took part in a new electronic game demonstrating how Adalat can help to block the development of atherosclerosis. Also presentated at the booth were the oral antidiabetics (OAD) Glucobay with its CV beneficial data and Ventavis, the only inhaled treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). A capacity audience of almost 400 delegates attended the Bayer BSP satellite symposium where they learned about the importance of combining CV risk management strategies to ensure more individuals are protected from CVD. Peter Meredith and Giuseppe Mancia presented a compelling story; they not only demonstrated that Adalat is a unique molecule providing early, effective and consistent 24-hour blood-pressure (BP) control across a wide group of hypertensive individuals, but that its benefits, which extend to a large proportion of patients including those with additional CV risk factors, can not be claimed by other nifedipine molecules. The management of hypertension is changing – together with the recent findings of the ACCOMPLISH trial there is strong support for the use of strategies using multiple antihypertensive treatments. Giuseppe Mancia explained how TALENT will add to the evidence that Adalat is an ideal treatment partner for first-line combination therapy in high-risk individuals.

Based on a wealth of strong clinical data, current global CVD treatment guidelines support the use of Aspirin Cardio therapy for primary and secondary prevention of CV events, particularly in patients with diabetes. Sidney Smith explained that while aspirin for secondary prevention is unequivocal, there is a great deal more to be learnt about the benefits of aspirin in primary prevention.

The results from ARRIVE, which will examine the impact of aspirin therapy in individuals at intermediate risk of CVD, should provide important information about how successful prevention strategies can be developed that will truly have an impact across a wide population of individuals.

"After five years the external data monitoring board asked that we terminate the study because of a striking, very extreme benefit of aspirin. Aspirin® reduced the risk of a first heart attack by 44 percent, and this was quite an earthshaking finding at that time."
